San Francisco 49ers Draft Upton Stout Despite Concerns
The San Francisco 49ers selected Western Kentucky cornerback Upton Stout in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft despite concerns about his outspoken personality and demanding demeanor.
Stout, known for his fiery leadership style, was described by his college coach as someone who “wasn’t always easy to work with”. However, the 49ers believe his competitiveness and passion for football will be an asset to their defense. Tariq Ahmad, the team’s director of player personnel, acknowledged Stout’s strong personality but emphasized that the scouting team felt comfortable with his character and work ethic.
At 5-foot-8 and 181 pounds, Stout is expected to compete for the starting nickel cornerback role, a position that plays a crucial role in the 49ers’ defensive scheme. His ability to play physically despite his size, combined with his speed and agility, makes him a promising addition to the secondary.
Stout made a strong impression on draft night, repeatedly telling head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch that they were getting a “dog” who was ready to prove himself. His confidence and determination will be tested as he transitions to the NFL, but the 49ers are optimistic that his intensity will elevate their defense.
